In this introductory workshop, we will take a deep dive into the 500-year-old craft of bobbin lace, covering not only the technique but also looking at the history, identification, and contemporary practice of lace. We will start by building skills through making samplers of the basic stitches used in bobbin lace, while comparing regional variations and styles. From there we will learn to combine stitches to create both traditional patterns in fine thread and experimental designs on a larger scale. By looking closely at lace from the ground up, participants will leave with a solid foundation for advancement and understanding of this complex art form.
